Shape up for 2018

Yoga For Golfers

Based on her 17 years of experience with golfers, founder and president Katherine Roberts has developed a proprietary program that is focused exclusively on the biomechanics of golf swings and executed with only golf-specific benefits in mind. Held at Scottsdale’s Troon North

Golf Club, Yoga For Golfers classes and clinics teach modifications for every type of movement imaginable so that all customers, regardless of their fitness levels and flexibility, can find success, as they learn about proper positions for their golf swings, become more focused and improve their mental acuities. “Each session begins with physical assessments to determine the foundation of a customer’s mobility and stability,” said Roberts, who recently was named to Golf Digest’s list of 50 best golf fitness professionals. “Every

assessment is based on the golfer’s unique objective. For example, if golfers sway in their backswings, we will test their abilities to internally and externally rotate their hips.” Afterwards, clients will conduct

short breathing practices so that they learn how to master their breath, which helps quiet their minds, resets their emotions and limits tension from their bodies. Because their bodies are tension-free, they will be able to execute fluid golf swings more efficiently. Clients will then complete standing

power poses — which focus on foot function and train them to use the force of gravity to increase power from their lower bodies — and balancing poses that train them to distribute their weight evenly throughout their swings. “We also target the core with yoga and Pilates movements that help

customers maintain consistent spine angles throughout their entire swing planes and strengthen their lumbar spines,” Roberts adds. “And, because golfers walk four to five miles per round, we finish with restorative post-round yoga that’s designed to alleviate fatigue in lower extremities, so that customers can play more rounds with less fatigue.” Roberts, who can be seen giving

fitness tips on the Golf Channel’s Morning Drive, certainly summed up her position — and ultimately your position — quite nicely. “My goal is to help golfers play better

on the course,” she said, “so they’ll have a better quality of life off the course.” The rest is up to you! n
