HEADL INE S AT SOL IHUL L

Scottish singer songwriter Marti Pellow returns to the stage next month as one of the headlining acts at the rescheduled Solihull Summer Fest.

As part of the hit-making soft rock/pop outfit Wet Wet Wet, Marti enjoyed massive success in the 80s and 90s before the group disbanded. Subsequently he’s gone on to appear in numerous musical theatre productions in both the West End and Broadway as well as enjoying a solid solo career. He has over 25 chart hits to his name, including of course one of the best-selling UK singles of all time with Love is All Around, and a clutch of awards.

He talks to Sally-ann Bloomer from his London home as he launches his latest solo album Stargazer and prepares to return to the public eye.

So how has lockdown been for Marti? “I’ve actually navigated lockdown with a big smile on my face. It’s a double edged sword as it has been quite a frightening time but as an artist I had to make a decision about how I was going to spend this time and I was OK. I just got on with it.

“When I’m promoting an album or doing musical theatre I can be on the road for six to seven months so this was the first time I’ve had that much time at home and I’ve enjoyed it. I’ve missed my close family and friends that I’ve not been able to see but I’m a positive person. I tried not to think about being locked down but being safe. That different spin makes you feel quite differently.”

During the lockdown, Marti was contacted by family members of a fan who was suffering badly from Covid. He recorded her a song and message and she’s now well on the road to recovery but this got him thinking about how he could stay in touch with fans without any tour dates. Since then he has recorded more than 100 lockdown sessions from his spare bedroom, singing everything from his greatest hits from his Wet Wet Wet days to his latest solo work and covers of other artists whose work he admires. He’s also done some chatty, informal Q & A sessions with fans and started promoting his new album.

“It’s been great, it has given me such a good sense of connection. I’ve kept it light and fun and it’s meant I’ve factored in a little singing into my days.”
