The more long-term consequences of unprotected sun exposure are dry, dull and uneven skin tone. Sun damage slows down the rate of skin cell renewal, causing a build-up of old, dead skin cells that result in dull, congested skin. It can also cause stubborn pigmentation marks or brown sun spots.

PREMATURE AGEING

In addition to the risk of skin cancer, UV exposure can also contribute to premature aging of the skin known as photo-aging. Think fine lines, wrinkles, age spots and discoloration. It's estimated that 80-90% of visible skin aging is caused by UV exposure.

Sun damage can destroy the collagen and elastin in your skin. Collagen is a protein that retains the firmness or structure of your skin and elastin is the support fibre that allows skin to bounce back. Collagen and elastin degradation in the deeper skin layers can result in premature signs of skin ageing, such as wrinkles and fine lines, because your skin loses its elasticity and firmness.

Prevention is better than cure, so make sure you protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun every day. It’s never too early (or too late) to start using an SPF. In fact, the older you get, the harder it is for your skin to repair the effects of sun damage, so the sooner you start the better.

SKIN CANCER

Cancer Research UK claims that in the UK almost 9 in 10 cases of melanoma, the most serious type of skin cancer, could be prevented through enjoying the sun safely and avoiding sunbeds. Not only that, getting sunburnt just once every 2 years can triple your risk of melanoma skin cancer. Skin cancer can affect anyone - all ethnicities and skin tones – no one is exempt. Use sunscreen daily to protect your skin.
