by tim parks MOVIES TO MAKE YOU FEEL Ever since The Dickson Experimental Sound Film showed two men waltzing together 125 years ago, the world was shown that
there was a place for the gay community to have a piece of the celluloid pie. For many years, we were relegated to being the foppish comic relief, the villain or even a gay robot named C-3PO. C’mon, he had bossy bottom written all over him! Eventually, filmmakers came to their senses and realized that there was more than meets the eye on previous efforts and began, gulp, to see that there was a wealth of stories to be told through a lavender lens. Whether they were designed to make us laugh or to cry, the stories showcased the human condition of inclusion and gave audiences a different point of view about what our experiences could be about and how we could represent in the world of cinema. In recent years, some efforts like Boys Don’t Cry, Moonlight and Brokeback Mountain even went on to snatch Oscar trophies, bringing more legitimacy that we are here, queer and watchable! Others like I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry and Boat Trip — well, let’s just say that they time traveled back to when we

were just a clichéd trope, not bothering to get out of the shallow end of the pool, and sinking at the box office in the process. Let’s take a look at some treasured flicks that will get you into the Pride groove.
