TERM 4

Have a study space

You will need a quiet place to study, away from distracting noises and activity such as the television, radio and household activity. The room must have good light and fresh air. Make sure that you have your study material in this area.

Sit at a desk or a table. Do not lie on the floor or bed. A desk or table is the best surface for writing your study notes and summaries, and answering revision questions.

Study when you are fresh and alert. Studying at night just before you go to bed is not the best time. Try to study in the afternoons after you have had something to eat.

Step 4 Read the instructions again and underline the key words. Then you will know exactly what to do. The list of verbs on page 147 will help you to understand the instructions.

Step 5 Break the task into smaller parts. Stop and think about what you need to do. Discuss the task with your teacher if you need to.

Step 6 Get started as soon as possible!

How to approach assignments Assignments can be varied. You can be asked to answer questions based on a case study, answer data response questions, write a report, and so on.

This year you will complete a variety of tasks to show that you understand your subject. This section helps you to prepare for your formal and informal assessment tasks. These tasks could be assignments, case studies, projects, tests and examinations. You should approach all tasks in this way: Step 1 Read all the instructions to get a general idea of what to do.

Step 2 If the task is to be assessed, look at the marks and criteria that will be used to assess your work. If you are not sure, ask your teacher.

Step 3 Write down the due date in your diary (the date that you must hand it in). Plan how you are going to get the task done. Make a list of any materials you need.

Working with case studies and data response tasks You may be asked to answer questions based on case studies, news articles, book extracts, scenarios, and so on. You may need to respond to other information sources, such as quotations, graphs and tables, cartoons and lists. Read and digest the information before answering the questions. Make sure each answer is relevant to the case study or other source text.

How to approach projects

A project is longer than an assignment and you will have to do more work. You need to research a problem and collect information. You will need to produce a written report or make a presentation.

You need to complete the parts of a project over time. Plan the time you are going to spend on each part. You will not be able to complete the project successfully if you leave it all to do just before the due date. Your teacher will check on your progress from time to time.

How to do research You can use your local library, or read magazines and newspapers to do your research. You can also use the internet
