Study techniques

During this year, you will have to revise what you have learnt and the work you have done. There will also be times when you have to study for tests and examinations. Here are some useful guidelines to help you study better.

Plan your study programme

 Make sure you know what kind of assessment task you are going to do. Will you read graphs, draw diagrams, or do calculations? Ask your teacher. You then need to practise the skills you have learnt.

 Study actively. This does not mean simply trying to memorise information. Make mind maps, write down key words on cards, and practise drawing and labelling diagrams.

The key to studying well is to be organised. The following tips will help you plan and organise your study programme.  Organise your study material. Make sure that your work is complete and that it is in the right order. If any work is missing, make sure you get it from a friend or from the teacher.

Monday

3–4 pm Summarise units 1 and 2

3–4 pm

 There are always some content areas that we do not like or find hard to do. Plan to spend more time on your weak areas.

Draw up a study timetable

You should not study for longer than two hours at a time. Take breaks regularly, about 10 to 15 minutes every hour. Here is an example of a study timetable for an end-of- term test:

Tuesday Wednesday 3–4 pm

Revise units 1 and 2

4–5 pm Summarise

units 3 and 4

Revise units 3 and 4

Thursday 3–4 pm

Revise all summaries.

4–5 pm Test myself

by answering revision questions.
