UNIT 3 Input and output values

In this unit you will: • determine input values and output values; • determine rules for patterns and relationships; and • use flow diagrams, tables, formulae and equations.

Representing patterns and relationships

We can represent number patterns in tables, flow diagrams, formulae and equations.

In this unit, you will apply your knowledge of number patterns and geometric patterns to find input and output values or rules for patterns that are given in flow diagrams, tables, formulae and equations. A geometric pattern can be represented by a table. For example:

Term 1 Term 2 Term 3

Table 1 Geometric pattern in table format Term number

Number of dots

1 5

2 9

3 13 4 17 5 21

The table makes it possible to determine the rest of the pattern without having to draw the next terms. We can also use a flow diagram to show a relationship between numbers.
