The mark for Paper 1 will be based on the summative assessment of the learner’s progress up to the time of this end-of-year examination. See pages 36 to 39 of this Teacher’s Guide for assessment tools.


Paper 2: Written

Learners should supply their own short title. Learners should plan, draft, edit and present their essay.


Learners must hand in their drafts and edited copies when handing in the paper. Learners must write three paragraphs of 150 words in total.


Use the following assessment tool to assess the creative writing text by looking at the criteria and the categories of marks allocated in each category. Determine where you would place your learner and award a corresponding mark based on the descriptors in the assessment tool.


Marks Criteria


12 – 15 Content interesting, thought provoking, mature; excellent overall structure; length correct. Excellent planning, drafting, editing and final presentation. Excellent and varied choice of words and sentence structures to support text.


10 – 11 Content good, relevant; good overall structure, good paragraphing; length correct. Good planning, drafting, editing and final presentation. Good choice of words and sentence structures used with few errors to support text.


7 – 9 5 – 6 0 – 4


Content mostly appropriate and on topic; structure appropriate, introduction, ending and paragraphs; length a little too long or too short. Some planning, drafting, editing done, but there are quite a few mistakes. Vocabulary sentence structures and conventions mostly correct, but not varied.


Content often inappropriate and off topic; little structure; length much too short. Poor planning and little editing and revision. Only very basic vocabulary used; many spelling, punctuation and language errors make text confusing.


Content inappropriate and off topic; no structure; length completely inappropriate. No evidence of processes of writing; Unsuitable vocabulary; so many errors that text has little or no meaning.

2. Transactional text The friendly letter of apology to the teacher could be based on the story told in the creative writing activity or any other relevant situation and learners’ writing should be authentic. When you assess the letter, check that the learner has followed the instructions in the exam paper for letter writing. The learner has to hand in their draft when handing in the paper.

1. Creative writing text Learners should read the stimulus about being in trouble with parents or caregivers and write a story about it.
