The mark for Paper 1 will be based on the summative assessment of the learner’s progress up to the time of this mid-year examination. See pages 36 to 39 of this Teacher’s Guide for suitable assessment tools.

Learners should supply their own short title.
Learners have to hand in their draft when handing in the paper. Learners must write three paragraphs of 150 words in total.
Use the following rubric to assess the creative writing by looking at the criteria and the range of marks allocated for each category. Determine where you would place the learner’s work and award a corresponding mark based on the descriptors in the rubric.
Marks 12 – 15

Content interesting, thought provoking, mature; excellent overall structure; length correct. Excellent planning, drafting, editing and final presentation. Excellent and varied choice of words and sentence structures to support text.

Content mostly appropriate and on topic; structure appropriate, introduction, ending and paragraphs evident; length a little too long or too short. Some planning, drafting, editing done, but there are quite a few mistakes. Vocabulary sentence structures and conventions mostly correct, but not varied.
Content often inappropriate and off topic; little structure; length much too short. Poor planning and little editing and revision. Only very basic vocabulary used; many spelling, punctuation and language errors make text confusing.

2. Transactional text The learner writes a diary entry in which he or she relates what happened on the day when he or she saw an act of kindness. When you assess the diary entry, check that the learner has followed the instructions in the exam paper for diary writing. The learner has to hand in his or her draft when handing in the paper. Use the following rubric to assess the transactional writing by looking at the criteria and the range of marks allocated for each category. Determine where you would place the learner’s work and award a corresponding mark based on the descriptors in the rubric.
