learning for a period of 2–3 weeks. The first two themes can be used for weeks 1–5 of the term, and the second two themes for weeks 6–10 of the term. This allows the teacher to introduce vocabulary and language structures in a meaningful way through stories, games and songs relating to each theme.

Learner’s Book

The Learner‟s Book provides a complete English language programme for Grade 3 and creates a solid platform for learners who will move to English as the language of learning in Grade 4. The Learner‟s Book has: • Content and activities that meet all the CAPS requirements

Illustrations to support learning in a new language

• A variety of texts including songs and games • Links to the Big Books, Workbook and Reading Books.

Big Books

There are four Big Books – one for each term – for Shared reading. The Big Books have the following content: • A contents page that indicates to which units the texts link

• Stories, non-fiction texts and poetry, one text per week

• Beautiful full-colour illustrations to make learning fun and meaningful

• Texts of graded levels of difficulty to build in progression

• Texts to appeal to boys and girls and reluctant readers

• Texts that contain all the phonics to be covered in Grade 3

• Texts that contain all the language structures, including all the tenses that the learners need to learn in Grade 3

• Non-fiction texts that contain the vocabulary the learner will need in their learning across the curriculum in Grade 4.

If you are unable to buy the Big Books, these texts are also in this Teacher‟s Guide.

Readers

In addition, two Reading Books have been provided for the year: • Reading Book 1 has the following content: • The same texts as the Big Books, but in a simplified form, to make them suitable for

group guided and paired/independent reading 9

activities

• A new contents page for each term (which matches that of the corresponding Big Book for that term). This will help learners to make the transition from having a separate reader (as in Grades 1–2) for each term to one reading book with a variety of texts, as they will probably also have in the Intermediate Phase.

• Reading Book 2 has the following content: • A compilation of texts that link to the themes in Grade 3 (see page 95 of Reading Book 2) but have no (other) direct link to the texts in the Big Books or in Reading Book 1

• Stimulating texts and pictures, which make it ideal for group guided reading with the higher level groups, and for paired/independent reading for those learners or classes that want extended reading material

• A glossary on page 96 to expose learners to using this kind of feature.

Workbook

The Workbook has additional activities, linked to the Learner‟s Book and Big Books. You can use theWorkbook for support and extension in your classroom. The Workbook has: • additional language games, songs and poems for language practice

• additional phonics activities for practice • extended writing activities for learners who can move ahead.

Teacher’s Guide

The Teacher‟s Guide has everything that the Oxford Successful English Grade 3 teacher will need in the classroom. The contents of the Teacher‟s Guide are divided in five different sections: • Section 1: Series approach • Section 2: Teaching and learning English First Additional Language (16 units)

• Section 3: Planning tools • Section 4: Assessment tools The Teacher‟s Guide provides simple, clear instructions and suggestions about how to teach each theme in the programme. At the beginning of each unit there is a summary for easy reference. See the next page for an example.
