Connaught Golf CLUB

Connaught Golf Club is ready for the 2021 season and golfers can expect one big change to the course this summer, says Brian Oliphant, the courses PGA of Canada head professional.

A new green is being built on hole 15, which will start in the middle August.

“It’s one we’ve had the most difficulty with maintaining,” said Oliphant. “We’re going to go to a USGA green spec green and have it be a little different in design — it won’t be as severely sloped.”

Oliphant says hole 15 was the green most members mentioned in their member survey and the green will be more playable once built. He adds they won’t need to spend as much money maintaining the green because they won’t have to hand water it as much as they do now.

The 18-hole course in the centre of Medicine Hat is in good shape, and Oliphant says he is preparing for a busy 2021 season.

“I think it’s going to be another busy golf season,” he said. “We will still be having our COVID protocols in place, but I think it will be just as busy as it was last year.” The COVID-19 pandemic kept more people at home last golf season, which resulted in more golfers hitting the fairways at Connaught, says Oliphant.

The club is unsure if they will be able to have their regular tournaments, but Oliphant says he is hopeful they will be able to hold their annual Labour Day South Eastern Tournament which takes place every September long weekend.

“We had it last year with a reduced field, so we’re kind of hoping we’ll be able to do that again,” he said.

Connaught Golf Club had a smaller version of their men’s and ladies’ leagues in 2020, but they have planned for a larger field this season and will wait to see what the

provincial restrictions are like in May when the leagues would start up.

Membership prices are within $20 of last season. Seven-day memberships at Connaught cost $2,035 last season, with a dual-course seven-day membership to golf at both Connaught and Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club costing $2,360. Five day memberships (non-weekend play) are also offered at rates of $1,975 for the dual-course membership and $1,675 for Connaught only.
