THROUGH THE GARDEN GATE FLORAL DESIGNER JONATHAN MOSELEY
Our television horticulturalist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, introduces us to one of our most celebrated international floral designers who inspires and excites with his botanical brilliance!
It was while working on ‘The Allotment Challenge’ for BBC television in 2014 that I first met the
joyous Jonathan Moseley, warm, talented, adored by all and in his element as floral expert and judge on the series. Our paths have crossed many times since, both at flower shows and most recently on ‘Love Your Weekend’ for ITV.
IJonathan, who is based in Derbyshire, counts Hidcote and Kiftsgate Court Gardens in Gloucestershire as two of his all-time favourite gardens and has been a regular at the nearby Malvern Spring and Autumn shows for many years. He is a well-known face at these events, hosting the Flowertalk theatres and collaborating with florists and independent growers to raise their industry profile through demonstrations and exhibits. Sadly, the Malvern Spring Show has been cancelled this year, but there is still plenty of opportunity to interject some Jonathan into your life if you read on!
Passionate about British flower growers, he actively encourages us to support our flower farmers by purchasing British blooms – both seasonal and ethically sourced. I couldn’t agree more and a
visit to Organic Blooms in South Gloucestershire a couple of years ago, to join numerous growers from the Flowers from the Farm co-operative and stand amidst bunch upon bunch of jewel coloured anemones, proved that there is plenty of planty perfection on our own patches, should we chose to investigate.
Jonathan even took to the roads with his campaign to support our home-grown growers in 2018, taking his ‘British Flower Bus’ on a national tour of leading flower shows.
Jonathan’s has been a life full of flowers, first catching ‘the bug’, or for plant health purposes shall we say, ‘the passion’, at the age of 8. As a young teenager he was winning trophies at horticultural shows and after university, put his horticultural hand to running a successful chain of flower shops.
These days, it is sharing his floral fascination with others through exquisite installations and informative workshops which have obtained international acclaim. Where there is a high-end client, there is a Jonathan shaped creation – he is a regular at our Cotswolds based Le Manoir where visitors have not only enjoyed some Blanc but also some bloom!
