As an ophthalmologist – an eye surgeon - I like to take a very personalised approach to consultations and tailor them very much to the needs of the individual. Sitting down and chatting to patients is a great privilege, helping me understand their visual problems and goals. Certain questions pop up regularly, and while the detail of the answer will vary depending on circumstance, there is a consistency to to some the information. I thought I’d share some of that here with a few ‘Frequently asked Questions’.


HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED TO SEE AN OPHTHALMOLOGIST OR AN OPTOMETRIST?


Everyone should see their optometrist at least every 2 years and more frequently if advised to do so. Optometrists are experts in eye health as well as the assessment and


prescription of glasses and contact lenses. Even after successful surgery, it is essential that you keep up with your visits to them as they will usually pick up problems before you ever notice them. Most optometrists also now have state-of-the-art equipment in-store.


An ophthalmologist is a doctor who specialises in eyes. You may need to see one of us if you need further diagnostic tests, medical treatment, or even surgery.


IS MY VISION GOOD ENOUGH TO DRIVE?


For many, the ability to drive forms an important part of maintaining their independence. There are many medical conditions that will interfere with one’s ability to get behind the wheel; failing vision is certainly a common one.
