THEY USE ONLY COCONUT WAX, WHICH IS A

BEAUTIFUL WHITE WAX THAT DOESN’T SMOKE WHEN BURNING. IT’S ALSO VEGAN AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY.

The year of 2020 seems an unusual time to launch any new business venture so how has it been for them so far?

“We both absolutely love it. We have really embraced it. We are like Samantha from Bewitched, are noses are always twitching as we have become super sensitive to different fragrances,” Jo laughs.

As well as looking really stylish (the candle jars are unlabelled, so no annoying sticky labels ruining the aesthetic), the women were keen that the product was also the best quality too. They use only coconut wax, which is a beautiful white wax that doesn’t smoke when burning. It’s also vegan and environmentally friendly. The fragrances are all natural essential oils, so no nasty chemical smells, and everything is stylishly packaged in monotone.

The current range of fragrances are Bergamot & Patchouli, Coconut & Himalayan Salt, Lemon & Lavender, Mandarin and Lime and Neroli & Ylang Ylang which are available across the product range. For Christmas a special seasonal fragrance proved a huge success and sold out so limited edition scents, such as Mint & Rose or Tuber Rose for special occasions will be offered on a regular basis, including for Mother’s Day this year. There are also plans to introduce in-vehicle scents and wax melts and to offer a refill service so you never need throw away your favourite jar.

Both Jo and Emma were already juggling motherhood with other jobs but felt the time was right to branch out with something different.

“People might think it’s a strange time to launch a business but it just felt right. We are already really good friends, we have working space to create the products and to be honest it filled up a lot of time and gave us both a renewed sense of purpose.”

Jo had already been doing some research into the process of making candles and the various scents and they decided they wanted to produce a high end, but affordable, quality product using only natural ingredients.

Signing up to online courses and watching endless YouTube tutorials (becoming real candle geeks according to Jo), they perfected their technique and selected a final five core fragrances for their range.

In October last year they launched their website and began selling candles, room fragrances and reed diffusers as well as beautiful gift sets containing a selection of their products. Their business name JoYem combines both of their names, linked by a tree of life to reflect the natural element of their products.

“We want to be as environmentally friendly as possible. It grieves me to throw perfectly good things away so we’d like to be able to offer to refill these for people,” Jo explained.

“We are really excited about the future and of course would like to expand but we never want to get into the mass produced market. We just want to produce a good quality but affordable product which everyone can enjoy, even during lockdown.”

Joyem are launching a very special edition for March

As it's Ovarian Cancer Awareness month and of course Mother’s Day too, the special candle will be a triple wick candle in Black Pomegranate delicately sprinkled with Amethyst stones presented in a black pop up box!

The ‘monthly launches’ are not part of their signature range although there are continuous monthly fragrances that could end up as one of the main lines!

The ladies have chosen this charity as Emma’s sister in law Jessica Bourne sadly lost her life to this awful illness and they would like to raise money in her memory.
