OMG! THIS BOOK IS SO ME. THE TIPS AND STORIES
SHARED BY ED, MARK AND NICKY WILL HELP YOU LIVE A LIFE FILLED WITH MORE FUN, JOY AND ENTHUSIASM Alison Hammond, TV presenter
Yes of course kids have their moments when everything is doom and gloom. What we are talking about here is the overall attitude of kids in general.
Take this as an example – how much resilience, tenacity and determination do kids demonstrate almost from the moment that they are born? How much willpower does it take for them to learn to walk? It doesn’t matter how often they fall down, even after hurting themselves, they just get up again and get on with it.
Now compare that to the attitude of most adults, when presented with even a small setback!
With children every day is a new adventure, regardless of what is in the news. They live in the moment, creating adventures using nothing but their imagination.
A short walk outside can take hours as they notice everything around them – inspecting the tiniest cracks in the wall, brushing their fingers along the railings enjoying the sound they make, feeling the wind against their face. Simple pleasures that kids fully immerse themselves in and enjoy, with no expectation beyond that experience.
As we grow into adults we leave many of those amazing childhood resources behind to become ‘grown up’ and replace those resources with unhelpful traits which often limit us rather than support us.
The pleasure that we used to take from the simplest of experiences is lost and rather than feeling contentment in the moment like kids do, we look outside of ourselves to find happiness – seeing it as a destination to aim for. ‘I will be happy when…’
Many adults develop the habit of playing out a worst case scenario for every situation, the only outcome not imagined is the optimistic one, the positive outcome they actually want.
The reasons for this are understandable - protection and avoiding disappointment. Yet it’s another unhelpful habit having a negative impact on mental wellbeing.
So there is much we can learn from our kids during this pandemic, those resources we once accessed readily and have long since forgotten, we can reconnect with again simply by observing the kids around us. Notice how they deal with situations and adopt a similar approach.
None of us know how long it will be before we experience any kind of normality, yet we can still enjoy what we have right now, and we can do that simply by adopting a Be More Kid mindset.
DJ ED’S WRITING DEBUT
Heart Radio DJ Ed James has joined forces with life coaching experts Mark and Nick Taylor to write a new kind of self- development book ‘Be More Kid’.
In Be More Kid, the trio uses their years of training as relationship and behaviour experts as NLP practitioners to offer readers the toolkit to deal with the underlying reasons for their problems. The premise of the book is that we must all unlearn the unhelpful habits we pick up as adults and instead relearn our childlike traits such as playfulness, passion, purpose and being present.
For Ed James the inspiration came from his own and he draws on his own experiences as a father and in particular how his daughter coped with a childhood accident when she badly broke her arm. This made him see more clearly how adults deal with situations difficult situations and the aim of the book is to help people rise to these challenges in a more positive way.
“Have you ever felt there was more to life? Do you feel unfulfilled?” Ed says.
“Since childhood you’ve had all the resources that you need to create the life that you want and over time you’ve simply lost touch with them. Now is the time to find them again.”
The book looks at all sorts of scenarios and throughout the authors recall specific incidents in their own lives and then offer practical tips on how to refocus your thinking to lead to greater contentment. Each chapter has exercises for readers to try, building on their new found skills, this includes unlearning overthinking, the power of saying no and finding your priorities.
Ed said: “Life is just life. It’s your interaction with it that will change you and make it good or bad. That’s why you need flexibility of behaviour.”
