UHB’s tribute to Captain Sir Tom Moore
Captain Tom
NHS fundraising hero Captain Sir Tom Moore has left a ‘lasting legacy’ for the West Midlands, University Hospitals Birmingham (UHB) Charity chief executive Mike Hammond has said, following the death of the beloved 100-year-old. Mr Hammond is one of many leaders who have led emotional tributes to
Captain Tom, who has been hailed a hero of the pandemic, after he died last month from Covid-19. The World War Two veteran raised more than £33m for NHS Charities
Together, by walking more than 100 laps of his garden in Bedfordshire last spring. After his phenomenal fundraising efforts, he was knighted by the Queen in July. Nearly a quarter of a million pounds raised by Sir Tom has helped UHB
Charity support staff and patients through the pandemic. Mr Hammond said: “On behalf of everyone at University Hospitals
Birmingham, I would like to express our sadness at the news of the death of Captain Sir Tom Moore. “During one of the darkest times that our country has faced, Captain Sir
Tom provided a source of inspiration for us all through the quiet determination that he showed to raise funds in support of the NHS. He led a remarkable life, and leaves behind him a wonderful legacy. He provided a source of hope in a difficult time, and for that we will be forever grateful.”
Museum launches on- demand digital service
An ‘on-demand’ digital service telling the stories behind some of Birmingham Museums’ collections has been launched. Birmingham Museums On Demand allows visitors to not only view content from the comfort of their own homes but also help safeguard the future of Birmingham Museums Trust. Alex Nicholson-Evans,
commercial director at Birmingham Museums Trust, said: “Birmingham Museums On Demand is a way of making people feel more connected to Birmingham’s rich and vibrant collections and historic properties. We have been determined to find new and different ways to give our audiences opportunities to stay
connected and we hope that this new offering will bring inspiration, intrigue and insight.” Birmingham Museums On Demand starts with a programme featuring ‘Love, Betrayal, Poison and Death – Part One’ which takes a look at how artists have been inspired for centuries by powerful stories and strong emotions. And ‘The Bredon Hills Roman
Coin Hoard’ tells the story of 3,000 silver coins that were discovered near an Iron Age hillfort. Viewers can purchase a one-
month Birmingham Museums On Demand pass, costing £20. Each month a new package of
four exclusive talks and lectures created by Birmingham Museums will be released.
