Post office saved after funding is extended

THE future of Yalding Post Office has been secured for another year. Sub-postmaster Tim Chapman said the village branch was on the brink of closure in October last year since it relies heavily on the Core Tier Payment scheme. Without the subsidy, many sub- postmasters feared community of- fices across Kent would shut. Now Mr Chapman says the ex- tension means he will receive funding to the end of March 2022. Tim Chapman at Yalding Post Office, which has been given a reprieve for another year

the Government has recognised that post offices are a critical part of the country's essential infras- tructure, supporting millions of people and small businesses. “The work postmasters have done throughout the COVID-19 pandemic is a powerful reminder of how important having a post of- fice is, not just to people in local communities but to the thousands of small businesses which keep the economy going.”

Yalding Post Office receives

about £1,000 a month in subsidy, which is taxed as earnings. Postal affairs minister Paul Scully wrote in a letter to postmas- ters: “Postmasters and their staff have worked tirelessly to ensure vital post office services continue to be available to communities across the country. I know how tough these months have been on you and your families and there are challenging weeks ahead.”
