Community News - February 2021 7 Inner Wheel Club of Woodbridge January meeting report
Woodbridge Inner Wheel members
were reminded at
their January Zoom meeting of the pleasures of going to the cinema, and The Riverside Cinema in particular. Tina Wiseman has been with The Riverside since 1999 when, after a career in childcare and child protection, she was persuaded by Stuart Saunders into joining the cinema. As a member of the Company of Four, she had been more used to singing and dancing on stage, but is now engrossed in the intricacies of managing the business and planning the annual schedule of films that we all love to see. We were given an insight
into the hold that large film distributors have over how and when cinemas may show their films, and also the large amounts of money they charge the cinemas for the 'privilege' of being permitted to show their films. Next time you are sitting in the cinema and those annoying ads come on, you should be aware that they bring in much needed revenue to the cinema. Tina thanked the community of Woodbridge for supporting The Riverside which is one of the highest grossing independent cinemas in the country, and is often in the top five! Live broadcasts from opera, ballet, musicals, the national theatre, etc have been very successful and from a cautious start, these showings are now exceedingly popular. The lockdowns have of course, been challenging and
to be the final total. It had been stressful for Sharon compiling the quiz, but it had been a successful initiative and she was thanked for her hard work.
because of social distancing requirements, the number of available seats has been reduced by two-thirds. For the safety of their clientele, the decision to close the cinema had been taken just before the latest lockdown was imposed, but the cinema is ready to re-open just as soon as it can.
Inner Wheel Members agreed they will be delighted to return just as soon as it's safe, and wished Tina and The Riverside every success when it can re- open. The difficulties of supporting charities in the current circumstances is no doubt being discussed by all service clubs throughout the country. Members had the opportunity to raise funds for President Jan Whitaker's 2020/21 charity, SERV, by subscribing to a quiz devised by one of the members, Sharon Proctor. Trusting people not to resort to Google, it was necessary to know your chocolate bars, be 'tuned in' to Dingbats, and work out anagrams, as well as being aware of popular culture, and having music knowledge back into the 1950s! The quiz was distributed amongst family and friends, and the final amount raised has yet to be calculated, but hundreds of pounds was expected
Members continue with knitting hats and blankets for premature babies at The Ipswich Hospital, hats for the Seaman's Mission at Felixstowe, squares that are made into blankets for
distribution abroad. The
International Officer also has 35/40 knitted teddies that, when possible, will be sent to children in difficult circumstances in the world. In the UK members of Inner Wheel Clubs support refuge centres for abused women, child centres and drop-in centres, school breakfast clubs and much more. Inner Wheel in Great Britain and Ireland has raised over £2.8 million for various charities in the past two years. All this is carried out in the spirit of friendship and service. In February, Woodbridge Inner Wheel will hear from a representative from Lighthouse a charity that the Club supports. Lighthouse provides a safe and supportive refuge in Ipswich and offers a range of community services and courses to support women, young people and children to rebuild their lives after domestic abuse.

What links Goseford, a local abolitionist and local charity Home-Start?
The answer lies in the
Woodbridge Society's Spring programme. The Society hopes that 2021 will see us working and socialising together before too long. With that in mind, we have planned a series of talks and summer visits of interest to the town. The
Society's Planning
Group has worked throughout lockdown and tiering restrictions by continuing to comment on planning applications. Woodbridge is recognised as one of the finest small towns in England and the Society aims not only to preserve, but to enhance its many attractions. We have a recognised voice with the town and district councils and the larger our membership the louder that voice in local affairs. On Wednesday the 3rd of March, local retired Judge Peter Wain, will talk about the rise and fall of the medieval port of Goseford in the 1200s and 1300s. Located at
the
mouth of the Deben, Goseford was a substantial trading and shipbuilding centre, supplying ships for the English navy. Join us online to hear about its rise and subsequent decline. A month later, on Wednesday the 14th of April, David Keeling will speak about his ancestor John Clarkson who has a blue plaque in his name on Church Street. Clarkson (born in 1764) joined the navy as a 13 year old
Woodbridge 41 Club
and saw the brutality of the slave trade. In 1791, he was engaged to ship freed slaves from Nova Scotia to Sierra Leone where he later became Governor. Again, we plan for the talk to be online. The final event in this series will be on Wednesday the 5th of May when we will hear about the work of Home-Start in Suffolk. This important local charity, with over 250 volunteers, provides support for families struggling to deal with difficult circumstances. During the past year, with all its hardships, the charity helped over 560 families. The programme of summer visits will be advertised later in the Spring. We assume that some or all of these talks will be delivered online. Access is as usual, free to Society members. Normally, non-members are charged a small fee but on this occasion we are making the events FREE TO ALL! If you want to join any of the three talks, please email the Society on:

We look forward to seeing you!

Charity christmas card shop success
The Woodbridge charity christmas card shop has had another successful year, despite the covid difficulties. The shop is organised by
Woodbridge 41Club, and proceeds are used to support local charities and other good causes. The shop is especially important this year as many charities are facing a significant drop in donations, due to covid. The 41 Club organiser, Roger commented:
Parker "I am
delighted that we have raised over £17,000 for a range of local and national charities, despite a four week lockdown. Over the past 28 years, we have raised £922,000,
a staggering amount! I am very grateful to all the shop volunteers who were willing to help in these difficult times. It is great that so many people continue to buy their cards and help these deserving causes." The shop stocked cards from over twenty different charities. This includes favourites such as RNLI, Marie Curie Cancer, Barnardos, Blue Cross and Amnesty. Additional local charities include St. Elizabeth Hospice, East Anglian Children's Hospices, Somersham Ward, East Anglian Air Ambulance and Suffolk Wildlife Trust.
