Bombing of Halesworth Railway Station, 80 years on
At a little after 13:00 on the 18th of January, 1941, eighty years ago, a group of fifteen German aircraft took off from their base at Antwerp-Deurne in Belgium bound for this country to attack targets of opportunity. They were Dornier 17z's belonging to Kampfgeschwader III.

Norfolk IP20 9BZ
On crossing the coast in the region of Orford, fourteen of these aircraft carried on down south along the coast to attack targets at Felixstowe and Harwich. One however came inland dropping below the low heavy snow clouds periodically to find its co-ordinates towards Southwold. This aircraft found the railway line at Brampton and followed it south to a snow covered
Halesworth railway
station where at 13:55, it dipped out of the clouds and opened its bomb doors to release eight 50kg (110lbs) bombs across the railway installation. Despite being engaged by anti-aircraft fire in the area, including guns situated on Dairy Hill (football pitch) it pressed home its attack.
The station masters house took a direct hit. When the ARP, Police, Fire and Ambulance crews arrived, an immediate search was conducted, assisted by Army personnel who had been on the station at the time. The
station master, Herbert
Holland (aged 55) was found dead in the brick kitchen. His wife, Hannah Holland (aged 59) was discovered in the living room. Their domestic servant, 19 year old Joan Clarke who lived at The Avenue, Halesworth, was also found amongst the debris and was taken to Patrick Stead Hospital where she later sadly died of her injuries. Miss Clarke's mother was a telephone operator at the Telephone Exchange which was situated in Mill Lane. She tried to phone the station to see if her daughter was alright, but couldn't get through. It was a few hours later that she learned of her daughters passing. Reggie Barber who was the
clerk at the Booking Office, was injured on the head and his hands and later, after treatment
at the hospital, recovered. Other casualties with minor injuries sustained on the station were Sgt John Huggins RAF who sustained a knee injury and after treatment continued on his journey. Two soldiers were injured inside the hospital as inpatients by flying glass, those being, Bombadier Sgt Moody of the Royal Artillery and Sapper John Last of the Royal Engineers. What made this raid worse, was that the electrical supply to the air-raid sirens had failed, thus no warning was forthcoming. Herbert Holland, his wife Hannah and Joan Clarke, rest together in a corner of Halesworth Cemetery. Richard Pymar - Halesworth Airfield Museum

Exciting launch of new local business club
After one of the most challenging years, we wanted to spread some positive news to the local business community for the start of 2021. We are delighted to announce the launch of a new and relaxed business club being set up by business owner Warren Tydeman, which is designed to bring local businesses in the surrounding Halesworth and Beccles area together.
The primary aim is to enable local business owners to meet up once every two months and take the opportunity to chat over lunch and find out more about the services and the people working in the local area. Rather than feeling isolated, it's a great opportunity to allow
professionals to share ideas during these tricky times and importantly to find out about the people within the community. Following the latest Government guidelines, the first meeting is expected to take place towards the end of February/early March and the date and venue will be confirmed with the members who wish to participate. Mr Tydeman stated that he had carried out a similar exercise several years ago when he lived in Essex which had provided several great success stories and opportunities to those who attended. In the first instance we are hoping to get a similar amount attending which was in the region of forty individuals representing themselves or their
companies. Having relocated to Suffolk in the last four years, I am once again super keen to get the local community engaged and from the people that I have spoken to, there seems to be some appetite for this type of business club. If you are interested in being part of a club that provides a friendly platform to meet local business people, please contact Warren via email: warren.tydeman@sjpp.
co.uk or his mobile: 07947 440454. I am looking forward to meeting
up with driven individuals who are keen to support and be part of the local community. Let's work together not just for 2021, but for many years and help provide a better future for all of us.
Holton and Blyford Village Hall
Yet again, just as we prepare to open up the hall,
it’s a
lockdown, for the best possible reasons – but still frustrating! One small glimmer of joy for the villages is that we are able to host on the car park – Paul the fish and chip man, on a Saturday night! The van with loads of wonderful freshly cooked fish and chips is onsite from 4:30pm until 7pm.
January winners in our monthly tote draw are:
1st prize: Colin Hicks 2nd prize: Simon and Maggie Larby 3rd prize: Bob Stephenson 4th prize: Cilla Stammers Well done to all! Don't forget, at a time when we are not going about far, that there is a used bottle bank for all to use situated by the main entrance of the hall, which is continuing to be emptied regularly!
Stay safe and well – we will see you soon.
