Japanese Trends of Investment Casting Market in 2020

by Japan Foundry Society, Inc., Fuyuhiko Urabe T in monthly

urnover of each segment in Japanese market is shown in Table 1. Figures 1 and 2 show the trends production

weight turnover of each segment in 2020.

Comments on the trend of Japanese market in 2020 are shown below:

1. The turnover in 2020 is estimated at about 45 billion yen.

2. The market trends of each segment in 2020 are described as follows.

Gas Turbine Segment Turnover of Gas Turbine segment is expected to increase by about 20% year on year, as the recovery in the fourth quarter of 2017 has been going on since 2018. However, domestic demand prospects remain uncertain due to the COVID-19, and trends for 2021 cannot be predicted. If the trend continues, it will continue to support total turnover.

Automobile Segment Automobile segment is now significantly below Gas turbine segment, with the downward trend from the beginning of 2019 continuing into 2020. The automobile industry has been the industry most affected by the COVID-19 and has seen a significant drop since June. Year-over-year turnover is expected to decrease by about 17%. There will be no sharp increase in 2021 either.

Aerospace/Weapons/ General Machinery Segments Turnover of minor product categories such as General Machinery and Aerospace/Weapons segments are expected to be -15% to -10% from 2019. All of these products are mostly for domestic consumption.

Others Segment

In the Others segment, turnover has been halved since the beginning of 2020, but this is unclear in detail.

3. Turnover in 2021 will be expected to decrease by about 220 million yen.

4. External factors of concern; 20 ❘ January 2021 ®

In the process of prolonging the

trade war between the U.S. and China, which has been ongoing since 2019, the demand trend for investment casting products is becoming increasingly uncertain. Furthermore, in 2020, production has been stagnated around the world due to COVID-19. For 2021, too, there is no way to predict the situation in each category.
