DRILLING & EXPLORATION

Saipem Invests Heavily in Staff Competency With New World-Leading Simulator Technology

Saipem recently installed a DrillSIM:5000 Cyber drilling and well control simulator at their Saudi Arabia training facility.

Following a significant seven-figure investment, Saipem has expanded its Saudi Arabia training facility and installed state-of-the-art simulator technology to boost skills and competency across their teams.

The new DrillSIM:5000 Cyber drilling simulator with cyber chair features the very latest 3D graphics and modelling software to create an extremely realistic representation of the rig floor, which results in a highly immersive learning environment.

The cutting-edge simulator technology can be programmed with well-specific

conditions and scenarios allowing Saipem personnel to practise advanced drilling operations such as stuck pipe, jarring, managed pressure drilling and blowout preventer landing in a safe and controlled environment.

As well as training for all drilling operations, tripping practices and well control, the simulator will allow Saipem to offer IADC and IWCF accredited courses for the very first time.

All drilling personnel will benefit from the new simulator and it will be used to train and assess assistant drillers, drillers, tour pushers, tool pushers and supervisory and management staff.

SAS Drilling Instructor, Ben Saipen said: “The installation of our new state-of-the-art drilling simulator

suite represents a significant commitment by the Saipem management team to the skills and competency of our teams.

“The ability to practice a wide range of high-risk operational scenarios in safety is one of the most valuable tools of simulation and it is events that cannot be replicated on the job where competency can truly make a difference. With the new simulator we are able to fill any skills’ gaps and ensure our capabilities go way beyond basic system operations and basic well control certification to deliver the highest standards. This is a fantastic resource, which will put Saipem personnel at the forefront of global drilling and competency standards and will help to cement our reputation for technical excellence.”
