Inspections Are Critical Process in the Management of Asset Integrity
Inspections of surface and subsea assets have to be performed regularly in adherence to statutory legislation. Ensuring the structural and operational integrity of marine assets is critical to any business; regular inspections can deliver cost savings, improve asset efficiencies and extend an asset’s lifespan.
In the UK operators must inspect the length of its pipeline every five years, and in general, operators will schedule annual inspections on sections of the pipeline. Work Class ROV or Observation Class ROV check for leaks, evaluate how the pipeline is interacting with the seabed and observe any damage or corrosion. Pipeline spanning can create trawl snags and introduce vortex induced vibration. Primarily the ROV is checking that everything is ok, whether intervention or remedial work is required.
FPSO’s have to be inspected every 2.5 years and 5 years to meet class requirements. Inspections can be done in-situ or in a dry dock. An ROV system means that checks can be carried out in-situ (UWILD), thereby keeping the FPSO operational and significantly reducing costs. Observation Class ROV systems are easy to transport, quick to mobilise and install on deck, with a smaller footprint and offer a cost-effective solution for an FPSO inspection.

inspection requirement. On an FPSO the ROV system will regularly check thrusters, Sea Chests, Cathodic Protection Systems, Seam Welds, Bilge Keel and Mooring Chains.
Mooring chains also need to be checked regularly, and an Observation ROV with our patented chain measuring tool can deliver real-time results enabling the vessel operator to make immediate decisions.
Operations are supported by several ROV Technicians and a 3.4U
Inspector. Inspections will typically last between 7 to 14 days. The length of inspection can be affected by regional variations including climatic and environmental challenges.
Selecting the correct inspection methodology allows asset budgets to be managed effectively. The correct approach safeguards and maintains integrity which increases the life cycle of an asset and creates value for stakeholders. Assessments that identify no concerns should always be looked at positively.
