Family Tensions On The Farm I

a topic of discussion. Un- fortunately, we are peo- ple, flawed, and have a tendency to be a bit self- ish. Working on or own-

process, but if you are working closely with fam- ily members learning how one another com- municates is essential. Are you more volatile or do you run from conflict? How does your family ex- perience you in tense situ- ations? What is everyone's job descrip- tion? Sitting down and fig- uring

ing a family farm is beautiful and offers many benefits, yet it can also be very difficult rela- tionally. At AgriLegacy, we believe in helping family farms stay afloat and thrive. 1. Create Clear Lines
clearly, having clear roles, and valuing one another is critical to a great family farm dy- namic. 2. Bring in a Mediator If you're having issues,
bring in a third party. Countless families have
split because of issues with deeds, titles, and misunderstandings sur- rounding the family busi- ness. It is not worth it. If you are having issues with your partner(s), bring in a mediator to help sort through dis- agreements and bring clarity to each side and ultimately a solution. 3. Have Accountabil-
ity Greed is an ugly issue,
especially when it applies to a family inheritance. No one is perfect and un- fortunately, there is no way to control people. Because of this, it is so important to create ac- countability on your farm. This means no one person has all the power. You create a system of checks and balances to safeguard yourself and the family farm. This
may seem unnecessary right now, but remind yourself you are planning for the unfathomable. You are creating a safety net for your family. Thinking about greed
and tension in the family business is never a pleasant thing. But these things don't need to de-
stroy an inheritance and legacy. Creating a clear communication plan, bringing in a third party when necessary, and having a system of ac- countability built into your business plan can all ensure an anchor when things get hard or family

early in the calving season year-after-year. Reproduc- tion, typically isn’t consid- ered a highly heritable trait but we do know that there is a tendency that if a heifer calves late in her first year in the herd she’ll always be towards the last of the calv- ing season.

The above was proven to
be true recently when a SMS buyer was wondering why three heifers were slow calving back for their sec- ond calf. Out of curiosity I looked the three heifers up and sure enough two of the three were open at the first preg-check. The third heifer was only 35 days along at the first preg- check so she hadn’t settled to the AI service and possi- bly not one or two services from the cleanup bull.
There was no indication
from the prebreeding exam there was anything wrong. Experiences such as this reinforces thoughts that you might consider giving healthy heifers that pass a pre-breeding exam only a short breeding season as a virgin heifer. I know some of you may do AI on heifers then only run them with the bull for 30 to 40 days. ∆ ELDON COLE: Extension
