Our Media Horticulturalist, Camilla Bassett-Smith, has spent the past few months working on the latest Alan Titchmarsh television programme to grace our screens – here she shares her thoughts on the series that celebrates all things country and craft.
As I start a new year, I’m thrilled to be continuing as Assistant Producer on ‘Love Your Weekend’ – an ITV programme filled with plants, rural passions and a sprinkling of celebrity….. not to mention being hosted by the biggest horticultural celebrity of them all – Alan Titchmarsh!.
With its first TX (TV talk for transmission!) in 2020, it is now welcoming in the new year with a brand new series which is jam packed with material perfect for a Sunday morning. From rare breeds to country pursuits, this is full of rural charm to excite anyone from Cheltenham to Chepstow and beyond!
Obviously with Alan at the helm, botany is never far from discussion and alongside David Domoney we have looked at everything from houseplants to garden gadgets and had a hearty helping of herbs from the South Gloucestershire based expert Jekka McVicar. I’ve even appeared a few times, chatting about my favourite plants of the month – a real honour!
If floristry is your favourite pastime, then florist to the royals – Simon Lycett – has been on hand to create some spectacular arrangements, easy to create in the warmth of your own home this winter and lovingly created by Simon in our barn television set in the Hampshire countryside.
Many of the plants we have used have come from local sources, such as Brockworth Garden Centre, Hayloft Plants, The Aroid Attic and Colesbourne Park (there’s a spoiler for snowdrops coming up if ever I saw one!!). We have also had lots of support from specialist nurseries across the country including David Austin and Surreal Succulents. Television making really is a huge team effort between crew, presenters, suppliers, contributors, caterers and many more and never has this been more apparent than in these testing times where it has been essential to work together. (Socially distanced of course!).
