OF COURSE I WANT TO GET THE SHOT

and finding out more about the natural world. Although he loves all wildlife, he says his real passion is for deer and he loves trying to capture these shy creatures on his camera. Locally he is often called ‘the deer man’.
“During lockdown I approached a local landowner where I knew deer were and asked permission to go on his land to take pictures. Photography is a solitary past time as you need it to be quiet so as not to startle the animals so lockdown hasn’t really affected me.
“This year above all others though I have had the best time ever following the deer rut. I had no problems finding them and the wind seemed to be in the right direction so the deer didn’t detect me.”
While, like all photographers, Grahame is keen to capture the perfect shot of his subject on his forays into the local woodland, he stresses the welfare of the animals is always paramount.
“Of course I want to get the shot but it’s more important to me that I don’t scare whatever it is I’m photographing, be that a bird or a deer. The animal’s well-being is more important than the shot. The ideal is to get close enough, get the shot and get away without the animal even noticing me.”
“He was an incredible man,” enthused Grahame. “His enthusiasm really rubbed off on me and fired my imagination. He took us on a safari over the moors pointing things out to us and he’d probably done it hundreds of times but it was like it was the first time.”
That was back in 2009 and in the 11 years since he did the safari Grahame has retired from his full time job and has plenty of time on his hands to pursue his hobby and capture that perfect picture. He takes his camera (a Canon 7D mark II with a Tamron telescopic lens) out most days, usually close to his home in Breinton, Hereford.
“I am really lucky where I live as from my house its just 300 yards onto a bridal path that leads to the River Wye. We are also surrounded by beautiful woodlands.”
Grahame’s passion is for wildlife, something which he says goes back to his childhood when he loved playing in woods and fields
