M Gillian Nish Founder/President

‹We help individuals reach their self-employment goals by delivering a quality program that covers all aspects of business ownership necessary to start a business.

any people know Gillian through her involvement in the community over the years. She’s

always found great satisfaction in helping causes that make our community a great place to live. She has had the honor of being a keynote speaker at numerous conferences and has facilitated well over 100 workshops consisting of everything from customer service to dining etiquette. Given this dedication, it’s not surprising that earlier this month she was one of the nominees for a People’s Choice Award from the Heart of Our City Committee. After a rewarding career as the

Executive Director with the Tourism Industry Association of Alberta, Gillian decided to head back to her Southern Alberta roots and opened her own home- based business offering consulting services, strategic planning, research and feasibility studies. It was a tough decision but as is common with entrepreneurs, she didn’t let fear get in the way. She trusted her ‘gut’ because the decision felt right for her. In 1999 after eleven years of

entrepreneurship, Gillian landed a contract with the Alberta government training Southern Albertans about how to operate their own businesses. Being an entrepreneur is something that is near and dear to Gillian’s heart. She knows first- hand the plight of the self-employed and that it isn’t for the faint of heart. The message she gives to all the participants is that, “it won’t be easy but it will be worth it!”

The onset of Covid-19 brought about

change. Many businesses sadly closed and people lost jobs they counted on having. But as with any adversity in life, perhaps we could find some good in the same way that a forest fire brings about a new forest. Covid has brought on the rebirth of ways to do business as we are now seeing. New businesses will start and old businesses will start over again. Gillian sees our self- employment program as a catalyst to some of the change that is coming and believes it can be life giving for the economy and those risk takers that we call entrepreneurs. execuserv plus inc. has been offering the

self-employment program at no cost to eligible unemployed/underemployed folks in the Lethbridge and surrounding area from the Crownsnest Pass to Taber and up to Vulcan for over 21 years. The program is six months long and the first six weeks are spent in class. Gillian brings in facilitators, who are all respected experts in their fields, and entrepreneurs themselves. The program touches on everything a person needs to know to start a business from how to manage social media to marketing to accounting to the legal issues they may face. The information they receive is incredibly valuable. On top of that, Gillian herself reviews each and every business plan written by our students. Between this experience and being the the cofounder of the Chinook Entrepreneurial Challenge, she has reviewed over 1600 business plans. With that, we think it’s safe to say that when she makes recommendations to program participants, they are getting great advice.
