BODENHAM ARBORETUM A RIOT OF COLOUR

There is perhaps nothing more beautiful in nature than the glorious shades of trees changing colour in the autumn. Verdant greens progress to vibrant reds and oranges setting the sky alight in stunning seasonal glory, akin to a spectacular natural firework display..

Here in the heart of the region, there is a wonderful place to enjoy these seasonal sights at Bodenham Arboretum.

Situated in a secluded and protected valley around 20 miles from both Worcester and Birmingham, its 134 acres contain mature woodland, specimen trees and shrubs and two chains of pools and lakes, integrated within a working farm.

The site was bought by the Binnian family back in the 1970s. It started as the late owner David Binnian’s hobby, just planting a few trees each winter, until it developed into what it is today. It’s now run as a family venture, with the second generation of Binnians fully involved in its planning, development and day-to-day management, and the third generation hovering in the wings.

Autumn brings with it a riot of leaf colour ranging from deep butter yellow through to orange, reds and crimsons as well as an abundance of berries. Autumn leaf colour develops at the end of

the annual growth cycle, prior to leaf fall. The colour is particularly good when plentiful sunshine is followed by an early frost.

Hundreds of trees put on an autumn display that is perhaps the most spectacular in the area. The Acers will go from bright yellow to vibrant oranges and reds. Scarlet Oaks will, as their name suggests, fill the woods with sweeps of vibrant red, even Magnolia with its bright red seed pods add to the spectacle.

As the year shifts into winter, the days are shorter and it can be cold but there is still plenty to see and do at Bodenham. Falling temperatures and clear skies make for some frosty mornings and beautiful winter walks with the ice and snow transforming the arboretum into something quite magical.

Beautiful colourful berries are in abundance, bringing with them an array of wild of birds, from bramblings and fieldfares to the exotic-looking waxwing and of course, robins. The site is bowl-shaped with an opening on one side and within this
