A bumpy road ahead


Ireland has suff ered from Covid along with the rest of the world. And while the country and its freight industry are showing signs of re- emerging from the crisis, the road to recovery will be an uncertain one. But however long and hard it might be, it will get there in the end.


Vaccine airliſt could squeeze freight space


Airfreight capacity in Ireland


could be in short supply when the Covid vaccine starts to be moved in quantity,


towards the end of


this year or in early 2021, predicts an expert at a leading global forwarder.


If there are signifi cant exports of


the vaccine from Ireland, securing airfreight capacity will be key, says vice-president of global life science at Agility, Eric ten Kate. “Combine this with the decline in global airfreight capacity due to


the reduced number of passenger fl ights around the world, along with a renewed increase in demand for shipments of PPE globally and, of course, the normal demand for life science products. These diff erent products will all be fi ghting for capacity,” he predicts. One worry is that there could be a shortage of temperature- controlled containers. While it is yet to be determined


what role Ireland’s extensive pharma manufacturing industry can and will play in Covid vaccine distribution, there will certainly be inbound movements, says ten Kate. “Agility has the infrastructure in place with our warehouse facility near the airport in Dublin, plus the ability to ramp up if required. Most of the doses of vaccines will be moved by air,
