First class fl ights for four-legged passengers


Two-legged air passengers may be in short supply at the moment but Volga-Dnepr Group’s AirBridgeCargo Airlines has been busy with four-legged ones, safely delivering 54 cats and 25 dogs from Moscow to their new US homes, via Chicago. A total of 35 boxes of Maine


Coon, Siberian, Ragdoll, Bambino, Sphynx, Devon Rex, Bengali, British shorthair, and other cats together


with 21 boxes of Chow-Chow, American cocker spaniel, French bulldogs, Tibetan, Caucasian shepherd, and other dogs became ABC’s passengers on the long- haul Boeing 747 freighter fl ights, organized in


cooperation with


Russian cattery Hakuna Matata. All the animals received the best


of care during the fl ight and at the handling agent’s premises with enough food and water, with steps


taken to ensure that the whole experience was as stress-free as possible.


It’s been a while since the likes of the Bristol city quays, Penzance, Newhaven and even Ramsgate have featured on regular cargo ship schedules but is just what New Dawn Traders is aiming to do this autumn. Describing itself as an “experimental business” it aims to “trade in wild ideas and delicacies, working with sailing cargo vessels to import fi ne produce from across the Atlantic Ocean and along European coastlines.” Yes, you read that correctly –


someone is planning to use sailing ships to deliver freight in the 21st Century. The Gallant, operated by


partners the Sail Cargo Alliance should, as we speak, be delivering olive oil (organically and ethically produced, naturally) from Portugal to a string of ports including Bristol, Penzance, Newhaven, Ramsgate,


London and Great Yarmouth from late August until September. New Dawn is fi rst to admit that,


at over 100 years old, powered by sail and so able to make just two trips a year and with a cargo capacity of 35 tonnes, it is not trying to compete with Maersk Line. It says on its website: “From 5 to 50 tonnes, these sail cargo projects will hardly make a dent in a shipping industry where a standard cargo ship carries around 20,000 containers. Their voyages are more than an alternative to this gas guzzling industry, these ships are united around a way of life.” (Large container ships are in fact the most fuel and emission- effi cient powered transport on the planet, but we won’t labour the point.) Other vessels in the Sail Cargo Alliance are of similar size and
