Issue 6 2020 - Freight Business Journal

///UK NORTH EAST

The Port of Middlesbrough, one of the best-connected ports in the North of England? The question that may

be crossing your mind at the moment is, “I didn’t know Middlesbrough had a port?” However, if we give the

port its full name, Port of Middlesbrough; an AV Dawson facility, the name may become a little more familiar. AV Dawson, a business founded in 1938 by Arthur Vernon Dawson, the grandfather of current managing director Gary Dawson, has gone from one man and a horse and cart, to a multi-million pound business supporting supply chains by handling and moving freight from its 100 acre port in Middlesbrough. The company behind

recent deals with British Gypsum, part of the Saint Gobain Group and more

recently Waste Knot Energy, has grown rapidly over the years, but with

an accelerated focus on growth and expansion, AV Dawson has taken

the strategic decision to re-brand its facility as the Port of Middlesbrough.

Although a new brand for AV Dawson, it harks to the original name of that stretch of the River Tees which by the 1890’s was known as Port of Middlesbrough. Today with over 850m of prime river frontage, 4 rail linked, lock-free berths and a renowned strength

in cargo handling and distribution, the Port of Middlesbrough is well positioned, providing an efficient gateway to overseas trade, particularly with Europe. With quayside storage, custom warehousing, 42m high fabrication halls and excellent road and rail transport links. The port facilities

have been host to some exciting projects, the business’ site was selected to receive cargo for the construction of Sir David Attenborough’s new wharf in Antarctica, on behalf of transglobal projects, beating competition from ports across the country. The project involved turning its quayside facilities into a bio secure zone for the loading of the shipment destined for Antarctica. The success of the project has delivered at least a further two years of specialist cargo work for the company. The

site also helps

bolster the Tees Valley’s export credentials, more is exported through the River Tees (By tonnage) than any other river
