The fi rst Covid vaccines could be subject to extremely stringent conditions in the supply chain, including a requirement for transport at
-80°C says global
logistics operator DHL. Development of a Covid vaccine has been fast-tracked at labs around the world, with a process that
would normally take a minimum of fi ve years being telescoped into barely a year, say DHL and its analytics partner McKinsey & Company in a white paper, ‘Delivering Pandemic Resilience’. The speed of development means that much of the data on stability in transport that would normally be
available for medicines by the time they reach the global distribution stage will not be available for the Covid vaccine when it is fi rst shipped. It means that the entire supply chain for some versions of the vaccine will have to operate at super-low temperatures to ensure stability and safety, the paper says.
