[NEWS] NEWS BITES TAKE ON THE ‘FEED RUN’ FOR HORSES IN NEED

Redwings Horse Sanctuary, in partnership with SPILLERS™, is encouraging as many people as possible to run, horse ride, cycle, swim or walk 10km and help raise money towards essential feed for its 1,500 rescued horses, ponies, donkeys and mules.

Like many charities, Redwings has been leſt counting the cost of the coronavirus lockdown and is now looking ahead, especially towards the colder months when grazing alone is no longer sufficient, to make sure it can support its residents who will require extra feeds, either because of age, dental issues or existing health conditions.

Through wind, rain and sometimes even snow, the charity’s equine carers travel across Redwings’ large sanctuary sites every day, delivering nutritious feeds to those horses who need them, oſten covering many miles multiple times a day!

Inspired by their dedication, Redwings is asking supporters to take on their own ‘Feed Run’ challenge and complete a 10km course of their choosing, in whatever way they like, either all at once or in sections.

To take part costs a donation of £10 – the approximate cost of a bag of horse feed – and each participant must nominate a friend to take on the challenge next! Those taking

part are also welcome to encourage their family and friends to

Search is on to find top UK Veterinary Nurse of 2020

B 4

lue Cross has begun its annual search for the UK‘s ' Veterinary Nurse of the year' and is calling on pet owners and veterinary practices to put forward vet nurses who have

gone the extra mile in 2020. The charity’s award recognises the dedication of the country’s vet nurses and their invaluable support to their veterinary teams, the nation’s pets and pet owners. The award is given to a vet nurse who not only cares for sick and injured pets but also encourages responsible pet ownership and improves pet welfare in their community.

The award will be presented at the British Veterinary Nurse Association (BVNA) online ‘This Is Us’ event on Saturday 10 October during a virtual awards ceremony in the evening.

September/October 2020

David Catlow, Blue Cross Director of Veterinary Clinical Services said: “With vet practices across the UK having had to rethink how we deliver our services as a result of Covid, delivering only emergency and essential services for the duration of lockdown, it has been a particularly challenging year for the whole industry. Many vet nurses working in veterinary practice have demonstrated outstanding leadership and commitment going ‘above and beyond’ in these extraordinary times.”

Last year's Veterinary Nurse award was presented to Danielle Pountain who is Deputy Head Nurse at Pool House Veterinary Hospital in Lichfield.

Danielle said: “I was overwhelmed to receive the call that I had been selected as the Blue Cross Vet Nurse of the Year. It felt like an unbelievable honour to have been considered worthy for an award

sponsor them to help raise further funds. Every finisher will then be personally congratulated on Redwings’ social media pages and will receive a special video ‘thank you’ from the horses they have helped.

SPILLERS has also generously pledged to donate 1kg of feed for every 1km completed, so not only will every participant be raising vital funds towards the care of Redwings’ horses, every step will be earning the charity valuable feed to support its herds!

Jude Palmer, organiser of the Redwings Feed Run, said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for anyone looking to take on a challenge and make a real difference to the lives of rescued horses and donkeys. Our equine carers are out there every day making sure our rescued residents receive all the specialist care they need and this is a fun way for you to become a part of the team – whether you ride, run, walk, cycle, swim or even pogo, you can 10k your way

“We’d also like to say a huge thank you to SPILLERS for supporting this fundraising initiative. Everything Redwings does is 100% funded by donations and thanks to their support every step, horse trot or swim stroke you make will bring us that bit closer to securing more feed for our horses, which will be gratefully received at this challenging time. We can’t wait to see what everyone gets up to!”

Clare Barfoot RNutr, Marketing and Research and Development Director at SPILLERS, said: “We are proud to support Redwings in this way. The impact of the pandemic on the UK’s equine charities is likely to be exacerbated as winter sets in and it will place great strain on their resources. By providing feed and raising awareness of this fabulous Feed Run campaign we hope to help Redwings help even more horses and ponies in need this winter.”
