Research Libraries UK Conference

RLUK Conference takes place at the Well- come Collection from 16 to 18 March. This year’s theme is on how libraries are transforming, and how they have the power to transform – changing the culture of research andadaptingvaluesandservicesofferedby libraries. Keynote Speakers include Chris Bourg from MIT, Mackenzie Smith from University of California, Cerys Hearsay, of Post Shift, University of York’s Masud Khokhar, and Bergis Jules, of Documenting the Now. The programme also includes network- ing opportunities and a range of sessions centred on supporting research through the library and services. Organisers say: “The conference is an excel- lent opportunity for professionals to connect, discuss and debate together in order to help shape the research library of the 21st century.” l https://rlukconference.com/

Book numbers cut by 500k in Essex

A FREEDOM of Information request has revealed that Essex Libraries has cut the number of books it holds by 500,000 over the last decade.

Campaigners say the reduction has been noticed by users, with many complaining about a lack of choice and long waiting times for titles. However, an Essex County Council spokesperson said the reduction was part of natural weeding and was evidence-based, adding that: “We have increased our e-books stock and added e-comics last year, in response to this changing demand”.

New Trustee for CILIP Board

BINNY Brynolf has been appointed to CILIP’s Board of Trustees. Binny is Digital Resources Librarian at Chatham House and has worked in libraries for more than 20 years – including public, academic and special. Binni said: “We need a professional association that truly represents our sector and is able to be a champion for positive change.”

8 INFORMATION PROFESSIONAL

New CILIP app is set to launch in spring

A NEW CILIP app will be launched in early spring, offering members new and improved digital features. The app will replace the Information Professional app, that is currently avail- able in Apple’s iTunes store and Google’s Play store. The new app will include the digital version of Information Profes- sional, but will also feature links to some of CILIP’s other services. Information Professional Editor Rob Green said: “We have an opportunity to change the way we communicate with members and reach out to non-mem- bers with this new app. Our current app gives members a choice in how they read Information Professional, but the new app gives us more scope to innovate.” As well as instantly delivering Infor -

mation Professional to members’ fi ngertips,theappcouldincludeliverecruit- ment ads, information about upcoming CILIP events, and links to membership. Rob said: “We have some ideas in place already, and of course Information Pro- fessional will be a big part of the new app. We know more and more people are

using mobile devices to access content and services and so we wanted to develop a platform that can grow with the needs of our users. “We will be starting with a some of our core services, but will look at how and wherewecanoffermoreinthefuture.” This year will see two digital-only issues

of Information Professional produced, helping to cut down on the amount of paper used as CILIP looks to become a more digitally focused organisation. The move will also help CILIP’s environmen- tal commitment outlined in its Libraries and Information Change Lives Policy document.

The app will include the full Informa- tion Professional archive and articles can bedownloadedandreadoffline.Current app users should get a notification of when to update their version and anyone new to the app will be able to download it and try it out later in the spring. Full details will be available in next month’s Information Professional and on CILIP’s website once the app goes live.

Early career award available as IFLA heads to Dublin

EARLY career librarians are being asked to apply for the Alan Hopkinson Award to help them attend this year’s IFLA Confer- ence, which takes place in Dublin form 15 to 21 August.

The award is open to CILIP mem- bers from outside the UK, who have a maximumoffiveyear’spost-qualification experience. It was created in memory of Alan Hopkinson, who was an active mem- ber of CILIP’s International Library and Information Group (ILIG) from 2004 up until his death in 2016. Alan was passion- ate about training new professionals and was involved in the Commonwealth Fel- lowship Scheme, as well as training young professionals from Eastern Europe. IFLA congress is the world’s largest

library and information conference and will feature speakers from across the globe.

Applications must be submitted by 31 March, and should include a CV, with two referees in senior posts; and up to 500 words outlining how attending the conference will support applicants’ pro- fessional development within the context of their career to date and using the three headings of “Visit objectives”, “Planned approach and content”, and “Application of learning post-visit”. The chosen candi- date will also have to commit to writing a report that will be published in ILIG’s journal. For full details on how to apply email ILIG Secretary Anna Jablkowska at Secretary.ILIG@cilip.org.uk.
