ccording to new research published this month by Oxfam to coincide with the World Economic Forum in Davos, the 22 richest men in the world now own more wealth than all of Africa’s 322 million women put together.
Just let that sink in for a moment – 322 million women across the entire continent of Africa earn less than the number of men you could fi t into a reasonably-sized minibus. The report paints a picture of accelerating inequality between the world’s richest and poorest populations, highlighting in particular the disproportionate impact on women.
One of the things that makes me most proud in my work at CILIP is the fact that our profession believes fundamentally in equality – equality of opportunity, of access to knowledge and ideas, in freedom of expression and intellectual freedom. But none of these freedoms benefi t anyone if people are trapped by poverty and inequality.
That’s why I believe our community should come together behind the global campaign to #FightInequality and help bring about a world that is more socially tolerant, just and inclusive. You can fi nd out more about this important campaign at
www.fi ghtinequality.org/. Closer to home, I have been delighted to lead CILIP in building a new partnership with the brilliant Girls Who Code initiative (
http://uk.girlswhocode.com).
Girls Who Code are working to close the gender gap in the tech- nology sector by teaching girls computer science and coding skills. Despite making up more than 50 per cent of the UK population, women account for less than 15 per cent of the STEM workforce. By organising coding clubs and digital programmes, Girls Who Code are helping girls build not just skills, but confi dence and ambi- tion in the tech sector. There’s a fantastic opportunity for libraries to get involved and host clubs, so do visit the URL above to fi nd out more!
CILIP’s theme for 2020 is ‘Books and Reading’ and we are work- ing hard to bring members an exciting programme of activities, campaigns and partnerships focused on the transformative power of reading.
Wherever you work and whatever kind of library or information service you support, we’d love to get your ideas and hear about your activities, leading up to a big celebration in Libraries Week this October. Visit
www.librariesweek.org.uk to get involved!
