Castle’s former chief takes a city challenge

THE former chief executive of Leeds Castle, who quit to take up the post of Director General of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission six years ago, has landed another big role. Victoria Wallace, who lives in

Maidstone, will oversee the run- ning of one of the Inns of Court in central London, where barristers are trained. Her title is Under-Treasurer of

the Honourable Society of the Mid- dle Temple. Mrs Wallace, pictured, who lived

in Battel Hall in Leeds during her 10 years at the castle, took up her new post in early July. Her previous job was based in

Maidenhead, Berkshire, but she spent much of her time abroad, away from husband Sean and daughters Emily and Georgia. The CWGC maintains 1.7m

graves and memorials to the fallen of conflicts since WWI at 23,000 lo- cations in 150 countries.

centenaries and WWII anniver- saries, and she oversaw significant internal changes to the commis- sion, including the preservation of buildings. Mrs Wallace, a law graduate

from Exeter University, said: “It has been very hectic and I’ve loved every minute of the job but I wanted to get my life back. “The new job is the chief execu-

tive function for one of the Inns of Court, where barristers are trained after law school. “It helps to look after the Temple

Church, the 12th century home of the Knights Templar, and has a fantastic double hammer-beam hall where Elizabeth I saw Twelfth Night performed.” She added: “It also comes with a

flat in central London, so what’s not to like?”
