News ‘3,000 jobs’ in

£180m plans AN £180m scheme earmarked for the former Aylesford Newsprint site could bring 3,000 jobs. Speculative developer Panattoni

has revealed its plans for the 90- acre brownfield site. It has been vacant since 2015 when Aylesford Newsprint shut, ending 90 years of printing with the loss of 230 jobs. Tony Watkins, development di-

rector at Panattoni, said: “It will deliver more than £140m per annum of economic value to the borough of Tonbridge and Malling by attracting some of the world’s leading companies as well as providing buildings to support the growth of local companies. We believe our proposals... come at the right time, as the country consid- ers how to restart, renew and rise to the challenges resulting from Covid-19.” The site could include seven in-

dustrial buildings totalling around 1.9m sq ft of floor space and create more than 3,000 jobs. It plans to submit a planning ap-

plication this summer. Construc- tion could begin next year with completion scheduled for 2024.

Tip site approved, but fears over extra traffic

A NEW recycling centre at Alling- ton has been welcomed as a means of taking pressure from the facility at Tovil. County councillors gave the go-

ahead for the site, on the border of Maidstone and Tonbridge and Malling boroughs, on July 15. FCC Environment (UK) Ltd’s

proposal to develop the incinerator at 20/20 Business Estate, off Laver- stocke Road, was given over- whelming approval by Kent County Council's planning com- mittee. The centre will have 22 re- cycling container bays, meaning residents in the north of the town will no longer have to travel to Tovil to dump bulky items of waste. The proposal for the seven-days-

a-week operation met with consid- erable local opposition, not least from MP Helen Grant who de- scribed the 13-hour opening sched- ule as “highly antisocial”. Residents voiced concerns about

noise and increased traffic. Local Liberal Democrat borough

and county councillor Dan Daley said: “It’s the best place to put it and, honestly, there’s nowhere else. It’s a modern facility and will serve that part of the borough well. No- body knows how much traffic will be generated, but there is a concern that traffic from the Poppy Field roundabout is at the narrowest part of the A20.” Maidstone south east county

councillor Gary Cooke welcomed the decision, saying it will take pres- sure off the tip at Tovil. He added:

“The new facility in Allington on the 20/20 park will take some of the pressure off Tovil and improve the service locally for Maidstone resi- dents.” Up to 60 car parking spaces will

be provided and a queuing system for 100 cars would be provided. At Tovil, cars regularly end up

spilling into Burial Ground Lane and the B2010, causing delays. Op- ponents have pointed to the addi- tional traffic pressure and pollution at Allington from plans for 840 homes on the Gladmans site near Hermitage Lane.
