Village pubs up for sale

TWO Maidstone pubs are on the market and in need of new owners. The George and Dragon in

Headcorn and The Bell Inn in Bearsted are both up for sale for £95,000. The easing of lockdown re-

strictions has meant that pubs are now able to re-open, with social distancing measures in place. Owner of The George and

Dragon, John Farrow said: “I can confirm the George and Dragon is up for sale and has been for over a year now.” The Rightmove description

states the High Street pub is near the mainline station and has five bedrooms. The Bell Inn report reads:

“Located in the busy village of Bearsted. Extensively refur- bished and well-presented pub, bar, and dining areas. Three-bedroom accommoda- tion. Impressive external trade areas. High turnover with scope to further increase."

Covid-19 blamed for schools being delayed

TWO new controversial schools for Maidstone, near junction 8 of the M20, will not open in Septem- ber as planned. Delays blamed on Covid-19

mean reception year children at Bearsted Primary Academy will be forced to start their education at Langley Park instead. The special needs and primary

schools on the Kent Medical Cam- pus site at Weavering have been dogged by controversy and local opposition. Critics said the site was unsuit-

able and did not serve the com- munities in greatest need of places. They were vocal about its prox-

imity to the Cygnet hospital, which treats mentally-ill criminals. It has seen multiple police call-outs to violence, evidence of weapon carrying and at least one escape. Langley Park head Libby Fidock

wrote to parents: “As you know, Bearsted Primary Academy, part

of Leigh Academies Trust (LAT), is due to open in September 2020, but because of the lockdown this build has now been delayed. “As a contingency plan agreed

by the DfE and the trust, we have agreed to house Bearsted recep- tion classes for the autumn term until their build is completed. “This will require some flexibil-

ity on our behalf and that of Bearsted, but having been through a similar experience when we were due to open, I am sure we

can rely on your support. Please rest assured that the education and welfare of our Langley Park children remains paramount.” The schools at Weavering are

part of the LAT, as is Langley Park. The schools faced further prob-

lems when Downs Mail revealed that they could not open until nearby roundabout works were completed as part of its planning consent. Those scheduled works have yet

to start.
