Grammar school holds on to best in Kent title
MAIDSTONE'S Invicta Gram- mar School (IGS) is celebrating after holding on to its crown as Kent’s best state secondary and remaining among the finest in the country. IGS has climbed to sixth in Britain in the Real School Guide. Maidstone Girls’ Grammar
School came in fifth in the county, with a national ranking of 33rd. IGS is part of the Valley Invicta
Academies’ Trust (VIAT). Head teacher Julie Derrick acknowledged the school’s “challenging year” in which A level and GCSE students were unable to sit their exams after after the school closed to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. Mrs Derrick said: “We are de- lighted to have been rated the best secondary school in Kent and I am thrilled the hard work of our stu- dents and staff, and the support of our wonderful parents, has been recognised. We have had quite a challenging year, and to have re-
ceived this accolade has really given everyone at Invicta Grammar School, and at VIAT, a great boost. “We seek to develop the skills, tal-
ents and interests of all our students as individuals. We have high expec- tations and high aspirations for ev- eryone, and our vision is one of academic excellence in a supportive and caring environment. “We offer all our students a range
of exciting opportunities and experi- ences that we hope will help them

develop into confident young adults. We are proud of every one of them and I hope this brilliant news gives them even more motivation and pride in their studies.” Two years ago, Invicta was rated
seventh in the country and top in Kent in the Real School Guide. VIAT is running the free, online
Invicta Summer Academy from July 27 to August 28. to help pupils who have been absent from school for months.

News Charity plea
A HOMELESS care charity has ap- pealed for donations of food and money in the wake of the coron- avirus pandemic. Maidstone Day Centre volun-
teers have continued to work be- hind the scenes to support people living on the streets. If you can help, contact Zofia at
manager@homelesscare.org.uk. Last month, the government an-
nounced an £85m handout to help councils look after rough sleepers. A spokesman said: “We look for-
ward to receiving details of how this will help the homeless in Maidstone.”
A close call
A RECOVERY driver on his way to a collision was caught on his mo- bile phone. Police saw the driver on the A20
in Bearsted on Sunday, July 19. Kent Police RPU tweeted: “A re-
covery driver talking on his phone to find out where his next job was — a collision, ironically. “A ticket for using his mobile
phone means six points and £200 fine. There is so much technology available, or just pull over safely.”
