Walks & Ferries

Much of the South Hams falls within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) and it is not difficult to understand why it deserves such a special designation. Unspoilt coastline and ancient countryside meet with spectacular results, magnets for all who enjoy the great outdoors... at whatever level. With the South West Coast Path traversing

the area, and the National Trust as custodians of more than 40 miles of this fabulous coastline, there can be no better place in which to get close to nature.

But what if you are not so sprightly now as you once were, not so mobile or independent, reliant on mobility aids? Fortunately, some of the very best stretches of coastline along with beautiful, tranquil country- side are accessible to all. Experience the wild sweeping splendour of Bolberry Down from the relatively flat wheel- chair friendly network of paths or spend a day exploring the stunning Grade 2* listed gardens of the Dartington Hall Estate (all-terrain mobility scooters available to hire to make the most of its 25 acres!).

Just two of the many Accessible for All oppor- tunities for visitors to enjoy throughout the area. For the more active walker, you will be spoilt

for choice, no matter what your fitness level or interests may be. Birdwatching from soaring cliff tops; discov- ering the rich history of our medieval market towns; tramping centuries-old bridleways and footpaths across ancient farmland; stepping carefully around rare flora in traditional woodlands; stopping off for lunch in picture perfect villages; or meandering slowly along the banks of gently flowing rivers, down valleys so peaceful they could be lost in time. This is slow-down-and-enjoy country; not-to- be-hurried coastline – this is where you find time and space to relax and escape from the pressures of modern living. Circular walks; long or short trails; audio-en- hanced; or only accessible at low tide – there are miles of walks out there, just waiting for you. Getting around on foot, by ferry or public trans- port really are the best ways to make the most of this amazing area – check out the helpful Ferry information to plan your route and EXPLORE!
