tion – and where better to enjoy it than at The Cottage Hotel, which weaves its own spell on all who stay? New for 2020! Four new superior bed- rooms, opening late spring. Have you tried

The Lobster Pod Bis- tro, unique dining just above the beach, great for lobsters and fresh fish, plus a range of other dishes, and refreshments, includ- ing local beer, cider and gin?

For a quirky dining experience with fantastic sea views whatever that weather, the pods at Hope Cove are a must.

Opened in the Summer of 2018,

part of the Cottage Hotel re-de- velopment with the aim to boost both the fishing and tourism trades, this venture has been a great suc- cess. We set out to develop a busi- ness that could

help sustain the

local fishing industry. Tourism is now the village main-

stay, but it was once a thriving fish- ing community. Whilst the larger fishing boats operate from Brixham and Plymouth, Hope Cove is still a good source of crab and lobster. The bistro, aptly named the Lob- ster Pod is not just a restaurant - local fishermen use the lobster storage tank to store their live lob- sters. These are then sold direct to their customers, and of course, for the bistro. The idea was launched for the Lobster Pod Bistro to be a small seafood bistro in the hotel grounds, utilising an underused store shed situated in a prime location over- looking the bay. had seating for 14, so additional seating was gained by the use of the pods, of which there are now five, seating 8–10 each, plus the “wheel” – some outdoor tables, a ham- mock (for fine weather!). A recently added cabin, ideal for small groups (up to about 44 guests, ideal space for birthday parties, wedding or anniversaries, office get-togethers, Christmas and more). The cabin is also additional seating when the pods are full.

The comfortable pods accommo- date up to about 10 persons each, enjoying 180 degree views across Harbour beach and out to Bigbury Bay. Most are heated – essential in winter – as well as having a Blue-

tooth connection for your personal choice of music and a telephone to order more drinks! Pods are book- able in advance and you can reserve a whole one if you are a party of four or more. The view from the Bistro, just

above the harbour beach is fabu- lous, with Bolt Tail and Bigbury Bay. Ships sailing into Plymouth harbour and the Cornish coastline in the distance. The beach almost a stone’s throw away, watching seals and sunsets, you would struggle to find a better location. The Bistro has built up a friendly

team of staff, lead by “Raf” who has many contacts with the local fisher- man, who can supply fresh lobsters most of the year. The menu is not “fine dining”,

but it specialises in locally caught sustainable seafood with minimal food miles. And with no hint of deep frying. The lobster is caught literally just off the beach from Hope Cove, or Salcombe during the winter. Other fish comes from the fish market in Plymouth – again caught locally. The sharing plat- ters, both seafood and vegetarian options, add to the cosy atmos- phere. A range of pizzas, light bites as well as soups and chowders, jacket potatoes and a meat dish is also on the menu. Take away food, served in bio- degradable boxes, is available, as is fresh fish from the fishmonger. Customer feedback is important. The menu is updated from time to time and seasonal items feature on the chef’s specials board. One recent diner commented: “This spot is incredible – the food was amazing – we didn’t want to leave.” The Lobster Pod, Hope Cove,
