FARM GARDEN Jobs in the Garden this month Water

August is historically the hottest month of the year so make sure your plants receive plenty of water, especially containers & new plants. Try to water rst thing in the morning or late at night so less water is lost to evaporation.

Use water butts, & supplement them by leaving buckets and tubs upturned to catch the rain.

You can also use grey water where possible – plants are not fussy!

Lawn care

Your grass will be growing fast this month. If the soil is very dry, raise the blades when mowing to leave the grass longer. This helps it survive in a drought.

Pruning

Prune Wisteria & other summer-owering shrubs like lavender once they have nished owering.

Deadheading To keep your displays looking their best, remove fading owers on roses, perennials, bedding & container plants.

This encourages plants to produce more owers, for longer.

Seeds to Collect Teasel (Dipsacus fullonum) Hang upside down to dry & plant in late spring.

Beans (runner, borlotti & broad)

At the end of the season, leave a few beans to mature. Pick when fully dry. Remove beans & store for planting in late spring.

Poppies (Papaver somniferum) Remove seed heads once the holes in the top open. Shake the seeds into a paper bag & sow in autumn or spring.

Love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena) Plant outdoors mid-spring.

Seeds to Sow

Cornowers (Centaurea cyanus) Sow August-September for May owers.

Wild Carrot or Queen Anne's Lace (Daucus carota) A beautiful addition to a wildlife garden.

Marigold (Calendula ofcinalis) For late spring owers.

Forget-me-nots (Myosotis sylvatica) Plant any time spring to autumn. Shade tolerant.
