What can I do to prevent Flystrike during the warm and changeable weather?

Willows vet Charlie Moss McCrory and Mark Pass SQP head up the Willows' Sheep Club – a service providing sheep farmers with flock planning services to improve health and productivity. Charlie and Mark give their thoughts on treatment and prevention of blowfly strike;

Charlie:

The recent warm and wet weather has led to severe risk of blowfly strike in our region. The NADIS parasite forecast uses Met Office weather data to predict blowfly emergence, and is a useful resource for knowing when your sheep are at risk: https://alerts.nadis.org.uk/

Fly strike occurs when adult flies are attracted to areas of soiled fleece typically around the tail. Wounds, foot rot lesions and areas where urine can scald the skin can also attract flies and increase risk. The adult flies lay eggs which hatch and the maggots eat away at the skin and surrounding tissues. Treatment should be sought as soon as possible if blowfly strike is suspected.

. . Mark:

There are pour-on products available which can help manage Blowfly strike. At this time of year, it can be beneficial to use a product that both treats and prevents fly strike. Crovect and Ectofly are useful products which treat and prevent, whilst having the flexibility of a short meat withdrawal.

Longer prevention of fly strike can be achieved with Clik or Clik Extra, but these are only suitable for prevention.

We encourage you to get in touch with your SQP or Vet to develop a farm specific blowfly prevention plan and always act quickly if strike strikes!
