LABOUR shortages

we have the same opportunities. We need to get the word out there that we have the same types of opportunities, the same types of jobs.”

This is where a new

strategic plan developed under a five-phase labour market partnership program coordinated by the BC Landscape and Nursery Association hopes to make a difference.

The Challenger® MT500E Series tractor combines row crop muscle and barn work agility to tackle any job on the farm. With multiple power, transmission, cab and PTO options, the MT500E Series is an ultra-de- pendable, low-maintenance machine designed to boost your uptime and performance. www.challenger-ag.us

BCLNA initially received funding to look at labour shortages within the horticulture sector. The work brought together representatives of 30 organizations, running from the BC Agriculture Council to Langley School District. Grower organizations, including the BC Greenhouse Growers Association and BC Fruit Growers Association, participated as well as training organizations and immigrant services societies. The collaborative approach

brought people together around common issues, and the strategic plan sets the stage for a pilot program of up to two years to implement its recommendations. An application has been submitted to government, but approval has not been given. “We want to look at issues

related to best practices; we want to look at and address innovative ways to retain people,” says Ann Walsh, who was contracted to oversee the long-term project on behalf of BCLNA.

The pilot program will aim

to address some of the key issues Amed identifies, particularly around the perceptions local workers have of what farming involves. “Horticulture does not

provide adequate information related to the career paths,” says Walsh. “[We’re] really looking at some different ways to introduce and create greater awareness so that people have an

understanding of the value of working in horticulture.” This resonates with Amed,

who says agriculture isn’t just about production roles. While the hard-working farmer is a heroic image, she says it’s not

momentum is growing to raise awareness of on-farm jobs. “If we’re not successful, if we do not get that pilot, then what we can do is look at smaller pieces that we might be able to do to shift the dial a little bit.” BCLNA, for example, is

working closely with the Industry Training Authority to present youth with the option of pursuing horticulture trade training. The school districts

all about tending the crop. “There’s a lot of hightech and corporate-level positions as well,” she says. “Not a lot of people, and especially young kids out there, understand the kinds of opportunities they would have.”

She hopes the pilot

program will give people outside the sector a new idea of what agriculture and horticulture can be. While there’s no deadline

for approving the proposed pilot program, Walsh says BCLNA is ready to “hit the ground running.” A workplan and a budget would be developed, as well as the infrastructure needed to support the initiative. The strategic plan envisions a launch date of 2021. “We’re still in that

preliminary discussion as to whether or not we will advance with the pilot,” says Walsh, but notes that

The mid-size, 5-ton S-500 Willmar spreader is versatile enough to adapt to nearly any situation on small or large farm operations.

of Langley, Surrey, Delta and Richmond have also been approached to boost awareness of horticulture programs among their students.

Separately, Agriculture in the Classroom Canada and the BC Agriculture in the Classroom Foundation are collaborating on an event that will draw 500 students and teachers to UBC on February 11 for “engAGe,” which will present agriculture as an option for science and technology careers as well as business. “With the ongoing focus on labour shortages in agriculture and food, our event looks to increase agriculture literacy and entice youth to pursue a meaningful and fulfilling career in agri- food,” says Kim Sabourin, communications manager with Agriculture in the Classroom Canada.
