much of the job as possible,” she explains. Part of the pair’s goal is to help make organic food more accessible. “We make what we need to
live but there’s no reason to charge extreme prices. Part of the joy I get from my work is watching the faces of my local, national and international customers get when they find out they can purchase organic product at reasonable prices,” Charlotte explains, adding that their customer mix has changed. “There’s some lack of trust
of stores where people don’t see where things are coming from. My customers don’t want a perfectly wrapped package; they want to see us in motion, working on the farm and cooking and canning in the basement space just behind their fruit sale area attached to the house. There’s a great hunger in 30 and 40- year-old people who had grandparents who preserved food themselves but parents who didn’t, so the skills are lost,” she says. “I’m not against
convenience. I go to the store sometimes just like others, but with all the talk about climate change and the future quality of food and the growing promotion of local food and farming, I think people are
saying to themselves, ‘Maybe I should at least learn the skills.’” With the province working
to increase the amount of BC food institutions buy today, Charlotte proudly notes that the farm once supplied fruit to the Kelowna hospital. During the second World War, it was shipped to England to supplement supplies needed for troops.
Good year
The past year was a pretty good one for the farm, in spite of cold snaps early in the year and above-average rain in the fall. Unlike some other Okanagan growers, they had apricots for visitors. “We accidently forgot to
prune four rows of apricots so ours didn’t freeze. And because our orchard isn’t condensed like high-density growing, we survived the rain. We were one of the first, if not the first, to have u-pick cherries ready. The wind dried out lots of our cherry trees,” she says.
Since they don’t sell to a
packer, they were able to leave cherries on the trees longer to ripen. And as organic producers, customers aren’t expecting perfect fruit. The farm is one of a dozen
listed in Tourism Kelowna’s Local Flavours guide. The profile helped boost

awareness of what they do, and sales. Next year the Hammans hope to add a greenhouse to offer a few more products. For customers with a bit of stamina, the walk to the top of
the property promises a spectacular vista. And, by placing the land in a trust for their children, they’ve ensured it will remain in the family for at least another generation. “Living on this land is more
