Chefs, farmers foster new relationships Getting local produce to restaurants depends on making connections

by PETER MITHAM VANCOUVER – Building

relationships was the focus of the second “Every Chef Needs a Farmer, Every Farmer Needs a Chef” networking and marketing event hosted by the BC Ministry of Agriculture at the PNE Forum in Vancouver, November 12. The event attracted more than 430 people, up from 280 last year. The 55 exhibitors included both major commodity groups such as the BC Dairy Association and BC Fruit Growers Association and start-ups such as Susgrainable Health Foods, which transforms spent mash from breweries into baking ingredients. The day kicked off with a

recap of success stories from the past year. Kevin Hooge, operations manager with Fraser Valley Hazelnuts Ltd. in Chilliwack, said last year’s event helped him sell through 80% of the nuts he sources from BC growers. (Fraser Valley Hazelnuts is the main buyer of the BC crop.) Abdul Majid of BC Garlic

Growers Inc. in Abbotsford and Vancouver restaurateur Shira Blustein spoke of their connection during the opening panel discussion. Blustein’s restaurants The Acorn and The Arbour use Majid’s garlic, which Majid had displayed at his booth on the tradeshow floor. In addition to fresh bulbs and freeze-dried garlic chips, Majid has developed value-added products such as powdered garlic and scapes as well as
