Cannabis class wins high marks at BC Fairs Buy BC exhibits at fairs also recognized at annual conference
by AMANDA POELMAN KAMLOOPS - The Cowichan Exhibition
received the Agricultural Achievement award at the BC Fairs Conference held at Sun Peaks Resort, October 17-19. The annual award allows fairs to highlight a new and innovative program or campaign that was implemented to promote agriculture in BC. In an effort to embrace the legalization of cannabis in Canada, the Cowichan Exhibition added a cannabis class, the first of its kind in BC, to its regular line-up of hall exhibits for this year’s fall fair. After discussion with both the RCMP and the Municipality of North Cowichan about safety and security, the cannabis class was announced to the community. The result was plenty of media attention for the fair. The class was open to non-commercial
growers who submitted three buds that were judged on uniformity, texture, colour and scent. The class attracted 17 entries, which were secured throughout the duration of the fair without incident. Additional awards presented at the BC
Fairs conference included Volunteer of the Year, won by Richard Sharman (over 18 years) and Kolton Shears (under 18 years), who both represented the Sooke Fall Fair. Outstanding Business Partner was won by the North Thompson Star Journal, and Commercial Member of the Year was won by Ben James of entertainment troupe The Laughing Loggers.
The best recognized In partnership with the BC Ministry of
Agriculture, BC Fairs also promotes the Buy BC program by encouraging the participation of all fairs and exhibitions during their events. The goal of the Buy BC program is to promote products that are grown, raised and harvested across the province. BC Fairs recognized Sooke Fall Fair and Summerland Fall Fair (Small Fair), Comox Valley Exhibition and North Thompson Fall Fair (Medium Fair), and Saanich Fair (Large Fair), for their outstanding Buy BC exhibits. BC Fairs hosted three Member’s Choice categories this year that were open to the winners of all fairs, exhibitions and festivals in their respective categories. Winning the Decorated Birdhouse
category for junior members in arts and crafts was Anthea Fairall (Saanich Fair). The sewing and weaving category called for an agriculture-themed table runner, which was won by Monqiue Gratrix (Agassiz Fall Fair & Corn Festival). Farm Animals was the theme in the
photography division and the challenge was Altered Photography. Candidates provided an original photo and an altered version. The category was won by Valerie Payne (Cowichan Exhibition). Each of the winners in these divisions received a $50 gift card for their efforts.
