at BC Ag Expo 4-H beef has record entries

BARRIERE – BC Ag Expo was held at the North Thompson Agriplex in Barriere, September 27-30, with over 240 4-H members from clubs in Vanderhoof, Horsefly, Shuswap, Okanagan and Kamloops, plus over 100 open exhibitors. This year’s beef show was the biggest yet with 68 market steers, four prospect steers, 47 bred heifers, 14 cow-calf pairs and approximately 40 futurity entries. The barn was full and beef judges Ted Creech of Lloydminster, SK and Kirk and Jill Wildman of Sangudo, AB did an excellent job sorting through all those cattle. Rylonn Elliott from

brought back Sealin Creek Startel 100E with a calf at her side to win the three-year-old futurity. She first was shown as a calf in 2017, then last year as a bred heifer. Reserve champion was McGillivray Rosebud 90E. A second McGillivray Land


and Livestock entry, McGillivray Rosebud 100G, topped this year’s futurity calf class and a bred heifer from Brady Ranches was the judges’ favourite in the second year division. The sheep ring was active

last year. Abby McCluskey of Vernon Young Riders won the Super Horse championship. The rabbit, dog, cavy and goat divisions all had increased participants this year and were real crowd pleasers with their fabulous costume entries during the Saturday night events. After all the classes were done and champions crowned, 480 people sat down to a wonderful roast beef dinner and awards banquet followed by a dance. A buyers’ breakfast


provided by RBC preceded the auction sale on Monday morning where Rylonn Eliott’s 1,442 lb. champion 4-H market steer caught the fancy of Interior Plumbing and Heating and sold for $3.75/lb. Lydia Pisio’s open market lamb sold for $2,500.00 while Deacon Pisio’s open youth market lamb dropped the hammer at $2,100.00. Kelty Brady of Tod Mountain sold her 4-H market lamb for $1,200.00.
