developing food hub network received a $1.5 million boost on October 17. The funding, awarded to the successful proponents of a June 3 request for proposals, came during a visit BC agriculture minister Lana Popham made to Commissary Connect in Vancouver, which has served as the pilot project for the BC Food Hub Network. The funding will support
located in Port Alberni and Surrey. The Port Alberni Port Authority will run the facility there while Plenty & Grace Co. Ltd., which focuses on plant- based foods, will operate the hub planned for Surrey. The province previously announced a food hub in Quesnel. An announcement
regarding a food innovation centre at the UBC campus in Vancouver is expected this fall. The innovation centre will focus on research and development activities. The BC Food Hub Network
is backed by $8.3 million in provincial funding, to be spent over three years. To date, the initiative has allocated more than $2.75 million. An additional nine feasibility studies have been funded for regional food hubs in Salmon Arm, Summerland and the Kootenays, as well as Deep Bay on Vancouver Island. This summer, the province announced $250,000 to support feasibility studies for projects in five more locations. Those locations have not been announced.
