Covid -19 Libraries update

Hello everyone. We hope you are keeping safe and well as we continue with our current way of life. Library staff in Northam and across Devon & Torbay, are continuing to work from home and we are still providing a different kind of library service while our buildings remain closed. During the Covid-19 lockdown library staff have been engaging with some of our service users online. We are currently running book groups, Lego clubs and creative challenges via library social media accounts. Some local libraries are also running Storytime Live and Bounce & Rhyme Live sessions, as well as keeping customers up to date with are our digital online offer. Your library card can give you access to free e-books, audiobooks and online magazines, using the Apps Libby, Borrowbox & RbOverdrive. There is currently a free Ancestry Library Edition, Medici.TV and online reference resources for all library members via the Devon Libraries website. You will need your library PIN to access this online content, but you can email your local library for support with this if needed. northam.library@librariesunlimited.org.uk You can also join the library via the Devon Libraries website. You will get all the information you need to start using all these services for free straight away. www.devonlibraries.org.uk We have also been providing a friendly voice at the end of the telephone in recent weeks, by contacting as many of our regular members who are in our senior category as possible, we have made lots of phone calls already and will be making many more. Often these customers are not online and can’t make use of our amazing digital offer. In normal times the library is an important meeting place and point of social interaction, providing valuable connection in daily lives for many older and isolated customers. We hope in some small way a telephone call will help anyone who is missing their regular library visits. For further information about any of our services, whether it be for yourself or a family member or neighbour please do get in touch by email, or message us on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. We are also encouraging people to look towards a more hopeful future with our Bunting Project.

One day this will all be over, and when it is, we want our library users to bring out the bunting with Devon & Torbay Libraries. We would like to ask people old and young, those who are online & offline, to create bunting to put up in and around our libraries when lockdown is lifted. We are particularly keen to reach people who don’t have access to the internet and social media, and we would like local people and community groups to spread the word to anyone they know who may enjoy taking part. It’s a simple idea that requires very few materials and no exact sewing skill. How to make your bunting: We are asking contributors to make triangular flag bunting with dimensions of 5” across the top and 6” from the top to bottom. You can use any fabric, single or double layered, in any colour and sew, glue or staple depending on your level of skill! Once the lockdown is lifted and the libraries reopen you can deliver your bunting flags to us. If you are housebound just give us a call and we will arrange to come and collect the flags from you.
