Local Police Domestic Abuse

Domestic abuse is the misuse of power and control by one person over another. This controlling behaviour may be exerted in various ways, such as through physical violence, emotional and/or psychological manipulation, forcing sexual acts or taking over your finances. It can begin at any time, can be obvious or subtle and can happen suddenly or gradually. It can happen to anyone regardless of class, age, race, religion, culture, disability, sexual orientation or lifestyle.

During the Covid-19 restrictions, some people may be feeling very isolated and unsafe because they are having to spend more time at home with a partner or family member who is harming them in some way. Abuse of any kind is never acceptable.

Although Covid-19 has affected the way in which some services are running right now, help is still available.

If you are being abused, or if you want to talk to someone about a situation you are unsure about, call 101 for help and guidance or Victim Support on 0300 303 0554. Alternatively, you can ask to use the consultation rooms at both Boots and Superdrug pharmacies, who are providing safe spaces for victims to access help and support. In an emergency always call 999.

You are not alone. Please do not suffer in silence.

World Elder Abuse Day 15th June 2020 Age Is Just a Number. Domestic abuse and sexual violence can happen to anyone - any age, gender, sex or reli- gion. In many ways people later in life can be more vulnerable, due to age related factors – particularly health and finances. Abuse is equally as serious whenever it is experienced in life.

It’s Never Too Late. No matter what your age, you have the right to live a life free from abuse. Generational attitudes can be a barrier for many people to make changes - marriage vows taken more seriously ‘til death do us part’ or ‘in sickness and in health.’ You have the rest of your life to live and deserve to be happy and safe.

Anyone Can Be Abusive. Older people can be just as abusive as younger people. Abuse can be equally as serious when perpetrated by an older person. There could be increased risk due to dementia, mental health issues and terminal illness. No matter what the cause of the behaviour, the result is the same. There is no excuse for abuse.
